Game Of Thrones Characters Map, people from the westerlands are known as westermen. the customary surname of bastards of nobleorigin born in the westerlands is hill. the westerlands are not the largest, mostpopulous, or most fertile part of the realm, but they are the richest.

full of hills and crags, the land is dottedwith mines from which pour gold and silver in astonishing quantities. there are gold mines at casterly rock, thegolden tooth, castamere, nunn's deep, and the pendric hills. besides farming, there is also some fisheryin lannisport and on fair isle. house lannister is the major house of thewesterlands. military strength of the westerlands is aboutfifty thousand men strong, though this count includes even green boys, and depletes mostcastles of any protection. while the lannister armies are not as hugeas those of the reach, they are the best-equipped

in the realm with heavily-armored soldiersand cavalry. the westerlands border on the waters of ironman'sbay to the north, and thus are under threat of ironborn attacks along the coasts. house lannister commonly keeps a large fleetof warships to defend against these attacks. the greyjoy rebellion began with a sneak attackwhich burned the lannister fleet at anchor. little is known of the time before the comingof the first men. like the rest of westeros, the children ofthe forest and giants lived in the westerlands and fought with the first men when they came. after the pact at the isle of faces, the childrenonly kept the forests.

during the age of heroes, the legendary heroand trickster lann the clever acquired casterly rock in some manner from house casterly. according to legend he is the ancestor ofthe lannisters, who became the kings of the rock with casterly rock as their seat. there are many different and contradictorymyths about lann the clever, assuming he actually existed, which only share the basic descriptionthat he swindled casterly rock from house casterly "using only his wits" - though thereare even rival tales about what specifically winning it "by his wits" involved. some stories say that he found a secret tunnelinto casterly rock, and snuck around inside

causing intrigue between the casterlys, stealingtreasures from one brother's chamber and planting them in another's to cause strife, until ultimatelythe casterlys killed each other and lann took over, and possibly finished off any survivors. other tales say that he used the secret tunnelto infest the castle with rats and vermin, until the casterlys fled - while yet othertales say that he managed to sneak lions into the castle, who killed several casterlys andcaused the rest to flee. the more pragmatic story is that lann wassimply a man-at-arms in the castle, who impregnated lord casterly's daughter, and ended up marryingthe girl. because there were no other heirs left, whenlord casterly died lann became the new lord

of the rock through his child. this story also has several variants, as insome there simply was no other heir, while in others lann had married a low-ranking daughterand had to "use his wits" in various palace intrigues to increase his power and eliminaterival heirs who were further ahead in the line of succession. even lann's origins are not clear in the legends. some say that he was actually an andal adventurerwho came to the far west, though others dismiss this because the main andal invasion didn'toccur until thousands of years later. then again, it is not outright impossiblethat he was simply an andal adventurer (or

perhaps exile) who wandered all the way tothe far side of westeros. even so, most versions of the story do assumethat he was simply one of the first men, the only human settlers of westeros at the time. whatever the case, the rulers of casterlyrock eventually married into invading andal families and the "modern" house lannistercame to be. on one other point the tales all agree: lannnever called himself a "king". the casterlys were very rich but they hadnot called themselves "kings" either, and lann didn't crown himself when he took overcasterly rock. the lannisters only started calling themselves"kings" many generations later, after their

steadily accumulating wealth made them verypowerful the lannister kings of the rock graduallyconquered or acquired neighboring territory, including the lands of the reynes and thebaneforts. they initially resisted the andal invasion, but later lannister kings allowed the andals to marry into the westermen nobility. in contrast to most kings of first men origin, the support of the andals allowed the kings of the rock to expand their power. when king gerold iii lannister died withoutmale issue, a council crowned his daughter's husband, ser joffrey lydden, who became thefirst andal king of the rock, joffrey lannister.

with andal support the lannisters extendedtheir rule to the golden tooth and fair isle and engaged in border wars with the kingsof the trident and kings of the reach. the growing strength of house lannister allowedthem to expel the ironborn from the western coasts, and king gerold the great raided theiron isles and brought hostages back to the rock. some of the eastern hills of what is now thewesterlands were historically ruled by kings of the rivers and the hills, such as the muddsand the teagues. loren i lannister, king of the rock, musteredhis armies to fight aegon targaryen, lord of dragonstone, during aegon's conquest.

allied with mern ix gardener, king of thereach, they assembled the enormous host of the two kings. however, they were no match for targaryendragons. king loren escaped the so-called field offire and submitted to aegon. his primacy in the westerlands as warden ofthe west was confirmed by the targaryens. since this time the westerlands have beenpart of the seven kingdoms controlled by the iron throne. during the rule of lord tytos lannister, thepower of house lannister was nominal. tytos was held in low esteem and was largelyignored by his vassals.

lord roger reyne took command of the lannisterarmy after ser jason lannister was killed in the war of the ninepenny kings. houses reyne and tarbeck eventually rebelledagainst the rule of tytos, but his son, ser tywin, led the campaign against the reyne-tarbeckrevolt. the two families were extinguished and theirrespective seats of castamere and tarbeck hall were destroyed. since this time no house has dared opposehouse lannister in the westerlands. the prestigious tywin served for a time ashand of the king for king aerys ii targaryen. predominantly mountainous, the westerlandsare well-defended from external attack.

aegon targaryen, before raping and murderinghis mother and rhaegar's bride, princess elia martell. gregor is known for his unspeakable cruelty;this is mirrored in the mountain's men, who casually commit atrocities during their campaigns. sandor, his younger brother, was driven awayby this behavior, taking service with house lannister and refusing to take a knight'svows to avoid association with his elder brother. the father of gregor and sandor, died in ahunting incident shortly after king robert i baratheon was crowned. their sister died young under queer circumstances.

farman incited a smallfolk uprising. some years after lord tywin lannister defeatedthe reyne-tarbeck rebellion, lord farman of faircastle grew truculent. tywin sent him as an envoy a musician playing"the rains of castamere", and that was enough to make lord farman reconsider his position. jeyne farman was cersei lannister's companionat casterly rock during her youth. it is possible that she is the daughter ofthe rebellious lord farman and was requested by tywin as a hostage to ensure his loyalty. house sarsfield of sarsfield.

house sarsfield was formed by the union offirst men and andal nobles during the andal the words of house sarsfield are:true to themark. house tarbeck and house house reyne were oncea noble houses, but both went extinct. house tarbeck of tarbeck hall. by the reign of king aegon v targaryen, housetarbeck was an old but impoverished line who had been in a slow decline for centuries.[1]this halted with the marriage of lord walderan tarbeck to the widowed ellyn reyne, who hadties with house lannister of casterly rock. house reyne became close allies with the tarbecks, and the tarbecks used funds from lord tytos lannister to rebuild crumbling tarbeck hall.

walderan increased the number of householdknights under his command from twenty to five hundred.[5]together with house reyne, the tarbecks became the most powerful vassals of the lannisters, but they were also defiant and disorderly. when tywin lannister was only ten, ellyn tarbecklaughed when the marriage of genna lannister and emmon frey was announced by tywin's father, lord tytos. when the sons of tytos came back from thewar of the ninepenny kings, ser tywin began demanding repayment for all the gold thathad been lent out. the confident lord walderan was imprisonedby tywin at casterly rock. in retaliation, ellyn imprisoned two lannistersof lannisport, as well as stafford lannister,

whose sister joanna was betrothed to tywin. tywin counseled that lord walderan shouldbe returned to his wife in three pieces, but lord tytos agreed to the exchange of hostagesat castamere, seat of house reyne. less than a year later, however, tywin sentfor ravens to castamere and tarbeck hall, demanding that they answer for their crimes. instead of doing so, both houses rose up inopen revolt which started the reyne-tarbeck rebellion. after tywin quickly defeated walderan's host,he ordered the beheadings of lord tarbeck and his supporters.

ellyn and tion the red were killed duringtywin's assault on tarbeck hall; tywin supposedly smiled when tarbeck hall collapsed with ladyellyn within. house reyne of castamere. house reyne was a family of first men whomade their subterranean seat at castamere. the mine's silver and gold made them wealthy, much like the lannisters of casterly rock. the reynes joined the kingdom of the rockwhen king loreon i lannister wed a reyne daughter. the downfall of the house had its originsin the time of lord robert reyne. he arranged the betrothal of his daughterellyn to tywald lannister, the son and heir of lord gerold lannister.

tywald served robert as a squire during thepeake uprising, but robert and tywald were killed in battle at starpike. lady ellyn, who had long anticipated becomingthe lady of casterly rock, was unwilling to forsake that dream. she persuaded tywald's twin, tion, to setaside his own fiancã© and espouse her instead. during this time, lady ellyn held a splendidcourt at the rock, staging magnificent tourneys and balls and filling the rock with musicians, mummers and reynes. she bestowed honors, offices and lands onher brothers, roger and reynard, and other relatives.

an acerbic hunchback, lord toad, was heardsaying, "lady ellyn must be a sorceress, for she has made it rain inside the rock all year". the death of ser tion lannister in the fourthblackfyre rebellion roused his father gerold, who took firm control over the westerlands. the "reign of the reynes" was over. in 239 ac ellyn was accused of trying to bedthe third son of lord gerold, tytos lannister, which resulted in her removal from casterlyrock and marriage to lord walderan tarbeck. roger reyne, who succeeded robert, was thelord of castamere during the rule of gerold's successor, lord tytos lannister.

the reynes had prospered greatly under tytos'smisrule. both roger and ser reynard extracted largeamounts of gold from tytos. after the war of the ninepenny kings, tytos'sson and heir, ser tywin lannister, demanded repayment of the gold that was lent out, butroger reportedly laughed and told his vassals to do nothing. this eventually led tywin to summon the reynesand the tarbecks to answer for their crimes. they chose defiance instead and with it, startedthe reyne-tarbeck rebellion against their lannister overlords. tarbeck hall was the first to feel tywin'swrath and house tarbeck was exterminated,

including ellyn. after an unsuccessful battle against the lannisterhost led by tywin, ser reynard and the wounded lord roger took refuge in the mines underneathcastamere. reynard, once his folk were safe, offeredterms to tywin. instead tywin ordered the sealing of castamere'sentrances and the diverting of nearby water into the mine, causing the deaths of all within. the downfall of the reynes is popularizedin a song called "the rains of castamere". the river road is a major road which beginsin casterly rock and extends northeast through the westerlands past sarsfield and the goldentooth to riverrun in the riverlands.

it then runs east along the red fork of thetrident to the inn at the crossroads, where it meets the kingsroad, which runs north andsouth, and the high road, which runs east to the vale of arryn. the goldroad is a major road in southern westeros. beginning at the lion gate of king's landingin the crownlands, it extends west along the blackwater rush and then through through aportion of the northern reach. the castle of deep den guards the goldroadas it passes through the hills of the westerlands. the road ends at lannisport and casterly rock. the goldroad was built after house targaryen'swar of conquest.

its route passes near the field of fire. house lannister of casterly rock. one of the great houses of seven kingdoms, and the principal house of the westerlands. their seat is casterly rock, though anotherbranch exists that is based in nearby lannisport. the unofficial motto of lannisters is "a lannisteralways pays his debts." the warden of the west is a lannister by tradition. fair-haired, tall, and handsome, the lannistersare the blood of andal adventurers who carved out a mighty kingdom in the western hillsand valleys. through the female line they boast of descentfrom lann the clever, the legendary trickster

of the age of heroes who tricked the membersof house casterly into giving him casterly rock during the era of the first men. the lannisters reigned as kings of the rockuntil they fell to the targaryen conquest, but were allowed to remain the liege lordsof the westerlands. the house had fallen on hard times duringthe rule of lord tytos, but was restored to its former glory by lord tywin. his daughter cersei is the queen of king roberti baratheon, while her twin ser jaime is a knight of robert's kingsguard. members of the family tend to have goldenhair and emerald green eyes.

the keep at casterly rock sits on top of agold mine, built into the very rock. from that lofty yet uncomfortable position, house lannister rules over the westerlands and influences all of westeros, by virtueof the kingdom's purse strings. house lannister possessed an ancestral valyriansteel greatsword called brightroar, but it was lost when king tommen ii lannister wenton a quest to valyria and never returned. the lannisters have been looking for a replacementever since, though they have not stopped looking for their own lost ancestral sword. when lelia lannister, the dowager queen ofthe iron islands, was mutilated by drowned men, her nephew, the king of the rock, begana war which left the iron islands impoverished.

the lannisters were also involved in the targaryencivil war, the dance of the dragons. when the wars of conquest began and aegonthe conqueror swept through the land, loren i, king of the rock, sided with mern ix gardener, king of the reach, against the targaryens. the two armies met in the reach, where thecombined might of the reach and the rock broke aegon's army. their army, dubbed by historians 'the hostof the two kings', numbered 55,000; five thousand of them mounted knights, while the targaryenshad only 10,000 men, many of uncertain loyalty and reliability. with their smaller force severely weakenedand in danger of routing, aegon and his sisters

deployed all three dragons at once; the onlytime this happened during the war. their combined fires scoured the battlefield, immolating more than four thousand men (including king mern and his heirs) and giving the battleits name: the field of fire. after he was captured, king loren the lastbent the knee and was allowed to remain lord of casterly rock and became the first wardenof the west. in more recent times, during the lordshipof tytos lannister, the house fell on hard times. tytos' weakness allowed him to be bulliedby his vassals. eventually his son tywin brought the waywardbannermen to heel and restored the house to

its former glory. soon thereafter, tywin was made hand of theking by aerys ii targaryen, holding that position for many years. when aerys was held hostage by denys darklyn, tywin's conservative approach took six months to resolve the conflict. this instigated aerys's paranoia and drovea wedge between the two, along with the king's lusting after tywin's wife, cousin and trustedconfidante joanna. tywin was never a jovial man, but when joannadied birthing their third child, tyrion, he was much saddened and his brother kevan becamehis right hand.

their sister genna took a maternal role overthe children. his second brother tygett died of a pox, andtheir brother gerion sailed off on a journey to valyria, never to be seen again. despite tywin's attempts to ensure a stronglegacy, life at casterly rock was dysfunctional at best. his twin children cersei and jaime began anincestuous relationship at an early age. cersei, while a young maid, visited a woodswitch called maggy the frog, who shared portents of cersei's future that planted seeds of herparanoia. cersei murdered her friend melara hetherspoon, who had witnessed the prophecy.

tyrion, when thirteen years old, was out withjaime when he met and married a girl named tysha, a match which was quickly and savagelyended by lord tywin. tywin offered tyrion to houses martell, hightower, royce, florent and tully, but he was rejected by all. jaime was a promising young knight, dubbedby ser arthur dayne. tywin was devastated when jaime joined kingaery's kingsguard, breaking off a betrothal to lysa tully. upon this action (which he perceived as themad king "stealing" his heir), coupled with the mad king's refusal to wed prince rhaegartargaryen to cersei, tywin resigned the handship.

this flew in the face of jaime's plan, whichwas to be closer to cersei: he was kept in king's landing while cersei returned to casterlyrock. during robert's rebellion, the lannistersstayed neutral for the majority of the war. only after the defeat of prince rhaegar atthe trident did lord tywin bestir himself to join robert baratheon against the targaryendynasty, perpetrating the sack of king's landing when the lannister loyalist grand maesterpycelle suggested the gates be opened. there ser jaime lannister, still a kingsguard, slew aerys, the last crowned targaryen king. meanwhile tywin's knights killed the restof the targaryens in the capital to prove their commitment to robert's cause.

afterwards, tywin's daughter cersei was wedto king robert. much of lord tywin's energy is directed inward, ensuring all of his relatives do their part to uphold the family name. the words of house lannister are: hear meroar! casterly rock, nicknamed the rock, is a castleand the seat of house lannister. the capital of the westerlands, it overlooksthe harbor of lannisport and the sunset sea. casterly rock is carved out of a great stonehill colossal rock beside the sunset sea. it is popularly believed to resemble a lionin repose at sunset. the casterlys of antiquity built a ringforton the peak, and as millenia have passed its

natural defenses have been expanded with walls, gates, and watchtowers. the base of the rock contains large sea-carvedcaverns. the stone has been mined for thousands ofyears, so there are hundreds of mineshafts in the depths of the rock, as well as yetuntouched gold veins. the rock has been measured at three timesthe height of the wall or the hightower of oldtown. it is almost two leagues long from west toeast, and contains tunnels, dungeons, storerooms, barracks, halls, stables, stairways, courtyards, balconies, and gardens. in the bowels of the rock are rooms wherecaged lions were once kept, and cells for

the worst prisoners. the castle contains a sept. the lion's mouth, the main entry to casterlyrock, is an enormous natural cavern reaching two hundred feet high. its steps are now wide enough for twenty riders. its port has docks, wharves, and shipyardsand is accessible by longships and cogs. from below the rock thunder can be heard, where the sea comes in. the golden gallery contains treasures of thelannisters, including gilded ornaments and walls.

the hall of heroes is where the lannistersand their close kin who have died valiantly are interred. the armor of lannisters of old are also displayedin the hall. the stone garden is a godswood with a twistedweirwood a tenth the size of raventree hall's. some claim that lann the clever still hauntsthe fortress, which has never fallen. lannisport is located less than a mile southof casterly rock, along the coast of the sunset sea where the river road, the gold road, andthe ocean road meet. it is one of the major ports of the sevenkingdoms and is the largest settlement in the westerlands.

lannisport is smaller than king's landingor oldtown, but larger than gulltown or white harbor. tywin lannister, the lord of casterly rockand warden of the west, includes "shield of lannisport" amongst his titles. at the end of the greyjoy rebellion, in celebrationof their victory over house greyjoy, king robert i baratheon ordered a tourney to beheld at lannisport. lord jorah mormont of bear island became thevictor of the tourney at lannisport and won the hand of lynesse hightower. of course, there are also other houses inwesterlands, but they are laying low in order

not to hear the roar of lannisters. however, i shall call all of them in casethey face an abrupt extinction. jasts, morelands - boasting descent from thelegendary hero pate the plowman, plumms - the aged lord ossifer plumm married princess elaenatargaryen during the reign of king aegon iv targaryen. he is said to have died during the bedding, after conceiving a son. however, rumors suggest that lord ossiferhad died before being able to consummate the marriage, and that the child instead had beenfathered by king aegon himself, leading to the saying that ossifer had had a "cock sixfoot long".

the words of house plumm are: "come try me". stackspears, westfords – whose words are:death over dishonor, yews, cliftons, lorchs, ruttigers, hetherspoons, house algoods, bettleys, brooms, garners, hawthornes, doggetts, droxes, myatts, paynes, peckledons – whose wordsare: unflinching, spicers of castamere, hamells, ferrens, falwells, footes, yarwycks and vikary’s– a similarity of their arms to those of house reyne may indicate that they originatefrom a bastard line of an extinct house. thank you for the attention and hope to seeyou in other parts of westeros.
