welcome hornet nation. today, we celebratethe graduation--and wait until you hear this number. we celebrate the graduation of4,939 students, 4,939 hornets. we are truly at sacramentostate living up to our mission. our mission reads, ascalifornia's capital university, we transform livesby preparing students for leadership, service, and success. leadership, service and success.
i was a creative writerbefore i was the president. and i believe in thepower of stories. stories tell you the truth. i want to tell you threestories of three students who are graduating here todayso that you can get a look into the soul of our university. the first is the storyof nicole hunter. nicole has a bigheart but the life that she has led hasbeen hard on that heart.
an african-american with somany odds stacked against her. it has been hard. she started working at 15. her mother was a single mother. her sister had achild at age 14. but she had a dream ofcoming to sac state. the problem was therewas no money. and so she'd take one class, twoclasses, one class, two class, no classes addingup over 22 years.
now she is a divorcedmother with two children, one with special needs, but sheis also a mother after 22 years who has a sac state degree. when did she take these classes? she took them at night,on fridays and saturdays. she took them, then, because shehad to work at calpers all day. and when i asked herto come to my office so that she could tell meher story, she got lost. why? she'd never been onthe campus during the day.
but now, she's got herthursdays and fridays back and her saturdays back. and what's she going to do on those friday andsaturday nights? party? remember, it's leadership, success and services. she's going to work with thehomeless and she's setting up a whole network for them. that's sac state success.
our students succeedagainst odds. i want to tell you thestory of maricela cortes. maricela was born inguanajuato, mexico. she came here as youngchild and her parents came to work in the fields. she cried when shetold me her story. they lived in cementblock buildings with no air conditioning. they worked out in the fields.
her father was a drugaddict and an alcoholic. her family did not believe ineducation and she had to live on her own and come to sac state so that she couldget an education. she brought a young manwith her, he got cancer, she had to nurse him for a year, yet she kept going to school. her parents don't even knowthat she is at sac state. when she went back to tellher brother that she was going to go graduate school, he asked,"what is graduate school?"
this young woman isone of 20 young women who received a scholarshipto go to indiana to spend this summer fullypaid to prepare herself to go into graduate school because weneed young hispanic professors, women professors, andshe's going to be one. in speech pathology. and you know what, there's thatservice part, she gave away, helped give away 1,400-- --we're arts and letterspeople, we understand this--.
one thousand four hundredbooks this last year for kids to read in sacramento. finally, the storyof the young man who won the president's medal. he's a [inaudible] from folsom who attended los rios communitycollege and then came here. his name is payam hojjatt. payam was declared agenius at age eight and the schools all looked tomove him forward in gifted
and talented ways but thenhe began having abnormal brain activity. and in a matter of months,he had 72 grand mal seizures. he should be dead. he lived, but he was inand out of the hospital. and for a long time hethought his name was andrew. when it came to the time wherehe was finally well enough to go to high school, he finishedhigh school in two years. he came here and thanks toour office of services to students
with disabilities, and he praises them, he was able to succeedand graduate. it takes payam threehours to write that paper that it takes you one hour. before every test he walks our campus because he believes,in his heart, that those trees are giving offoxygen that will clear his head and when he takes thatexam, he nails it. he aces it.
and this is the young man now who is graduating summacum laude with a 3.9. that's a sac state kid. that's a sac state student. an why did i choose him? faculty, i chosehim because of you. what does he want out of life? he wants to be you. he wants to get a phd and hewants to come back and teach
at this university and give backthe way you gave back to him. he is grateful. there are so many students iwant to tell their stories. i would love to tellall of your stories. i have a favorite studentout here today in your group. megan lucey. she works at epicure,we've had over 300 dinners and she's served, ithink, every one of them. and you think, you know, she's serving breakfast,
she's serving lunch, she's serving dinner, and she works every weekend. yet she graduatedin four years folks. four years. it can be done with ourstudents, it can be done. our students aresuccessful, let me prove it. would all thestudents here, all of you, if you graduated andyou're the first to graduate in your family, firstgeneration please stand up.
that is success. we are transforming lives. service, if you are a veteranand you are graduating today, would you please stand so thatwe can thank and salute you. if you are a veteran inthe audience, please stand so that we may saluteyou as well and thank you for your service. most commencement speakers speakof today as a new beginning. i don't think of today asthat way, i think of it
as a day of gratitude. i think of it as a daywhen we need to thank those who sacrificed for us. when we need to thankour parents, our spouses, our friends, our abuelitosand abuelos and abuelitas. when we need to thankeveryone who helped us. we cannot do it alone, you thought you were alone when you were doing thatpaper in the library, you thought you werealone when you are pulling
that all-nighter, but they werethere for you every moment, especially the parents. would the mothers andfathers please stand so our students may thankyou for their degrees? and it takes a village, would the grandmothers and the grandfathers, pleasestand or at least wave your arms and so we can celebrateyou as well. graduates, i hate to tell youthis but there were some of you that had an advantageover the others.
some of you had someone who isputting hubby through college or someone was helpingmom go to college. our spouses and partners, would the husbands and wives and partners, pleasestand so that those to whom you aremarried can thank you. and then there's that specialgroup that sacrificed the most. the group that didn'tget the cookies baked, the group that didn't get thebed time story, the young child who didn't get a hug untilthey were long asleep,
the young child who hadto play with grandma and grandpa insteadof mom or dad. would those who gave us thegreatest sacrifices, the sons and daughters, please standand if it's a young child, please lift that child highso that we can celebrate them. and finally, there's onegroup more to recognize. oh they made you mad,oh you cursed them, you got out in the car and youhit your hand on the dashboard, you threw books against walls, but they cared about you
and they set high standardsfor you and they expected a lot of you because theybelieved in you. and dare i say, they loved you. will the facultyplease stand and be thanked. you will never be forgottenand they will talk of you from time in memorial. thank you for your highstandards, thank you for caring about the quality, thank youfor caring about our students. i never end the speech, except one way and most of you
by now should knowit after a year. i'm going to ask you toall stand and it's going to be sac state is number one and stingers up, i already got a bunch of themin the back doing it, we know. [ shouting ] why do i believe in you so much? i believe in you because of theperson i'm about to introduce. gregory kondos. i would now like to introducehim because gregory is here
to accept an honorarydoctorate of fine arts. honorary doctorates are awarded by the californiastate university system and by californiastate university, sacramento to outstandingindividuals with outstanding achievements. gregory would youplease join me? bring him a little bit closer. gregory, or greg is asacramento state alumnus.
he graduated in '81 withhis ma and it's 57-- wait a minute, read this again. the light went out. in '51, he graduatedwith his bachelors and in '57 he graduatedwith his masters. he's works have beenexhibited throughout the world, in new york, in france, indc, even in the crocker, here. for nearly 30 years, he taughtat sacramento city college. he's known for his landscapes.
if you see them, you will seethe most beautiful purples, the most beautiful colors, the delta comes completelyalive in with his hand. he has been honoredby so many groups, i think it has to go and on. he's been honored in france,he's been honored in new york, he's been honored, everywhere, he got a life time achievementaward from florence, italy. this man knows how to draw, but let me tell you something
about him that's special. he may be all adn all asgreek as greek can be and there's a strong greekcommunity in this sacramento. but he's also, all americanbecause when i called him up to tell him that we wanted to give him the honorarydoctorate degree, it was during the super bowl. he wouldn't answer. he wouldn't answeruntil half time.
and then he answered. it is a true honor to acknowledge this great man. if you want to seeone of his paintings, go to the alumni centerbecause he donated a landscape and it's right in the main foyerthere and you'll see the work. that's why you need to remainan alumnus and be active in alumni association because ofhim, to be able to see his art. with that, we want to awardhim the honorary doctorate. please? mike if you willhelp me hood gregory.
care for a few words? >> i've been here insacramento many years. i'm an old man but i've stillgot a lot of fire in me. i do paint daily. why live? why paint? why live? that's my mottoand i enjoy sharing it with others especiallyyoung students. it's difficult to come upwith this to your parents when they ask you, "oh, you'regoing to college, oh really,
what are you going to do? what are you going to take?" you know, they expectwhatever that makes money. and i looked at my dad,i loved him dearly. and i said, "dad, iwant to be an artist." and being greek youknow, that puzzled him and he couldn't speak thelanguage, english language. so he looked at me andhe says, "go for it." and we were not, you know, hewas just a barber cutting hair
for 25 cent-- dollar-- twenty five cents a and 10 centsa shave and he had a shower at the back room, another dimeand he managed somehow with-- i had the gi bill to put me through a privateschool for a year. but my-- most of myeducation was at sac state. and i think i was lucky tobe one of the first students in the art department. i share that with [inaudible]and we-- others too.
but we kind of found our-- a hard way, but withthe facilities and the faculty to sac state. i'm still very active. i'm 93. and i work-- in fact, i workedthis morning for four hours just to keep my mind away fromthis nervous wreck thing i'm going through. i'm going through.
i'm a cowboy really in art. i love the country side. i've been-- i'm a traveler andi do enjoy looking at nature. i've been to greece 47 times, that's where my rootsare and i found myself. i have a mentor, paul shezam[assumed spelling] and i've been to france, in fact, i boughta house over there just to be near, because theoutdoors like [inaudible]. i enjoy-- well, my mainconcern are young children.
they want to be artists, they get involved somehow by scribbling and that is fine. eventually, i came around andhelp them a little bit just to talk them about what ittakes to make a picture. i hope i can, you know, keep going for another20 years at least. and sac state and sacramentojunior college were my main source of information. i had to work with somebody
and naturally a goodfaculty can make that happen. and so, i just wantto thank everybody. this, i want to sharewith my two children. my son is a space engineer. my daughter is a head coachat ucla in gymnastics. she just got an award also, the coach of the century. so, i'm proud of her and my son. but one thing that i really missand i'm sorry for all this art that i've done, my parentshave never seen a show
and that's because-- we-- they had to put the food onthe table so they worked. and so, i just realized, not too long ago, that they had never seenan art show of mine. but that's ok. the world has and theyknow that i'm sure. [ applause and cheering ] one thing that ireally am and i want to thank is i was marriedbefore and she passed away.
and now i am married to somebodyand i have really loved her. and she has helpedme tremendously. in fact, she talks too much. and i want to thankyou for coming here and celebrating this wonderfulevent from such a state. >> thank you very much. >> thank you gregory. we are very grateful foryou and we consider you part of our hornet family andyou will always be part
of our hornet family. >> congratulations again to honorary doctoraterecipient dr. gregory kondos. i would now like to presentthe college dean's award for 2015-16. the award recipientis recognized for outstanding accomplishmentsin academic, campus and community service. it is an award that recognizesthe important and powerful story
of one of our graduates. i am pleased to announce thatwe are presenting the 2015-16 dean's award to stephanie gin. please join me at the podium. >> ok. first, i feelgreatly honored to represent the collegeof arts and letters. i would like to thankthe dean and the faculty, staff and my peersof the art department for their amazing support.
and last but not least i wouldalso like to thank my parents for their unwaveringsupport throughout my whole undergraduate career. congratulations class of 2016. it has been a long journey. all of those longsleepless nights, cramming, meeting deadlines, those blood, sweat and tears havefinally paid off. tonight we are celebratingour accomplishments,
successes and our future. we are a unique college, thecollege of arts and letters. we are a group of thinkers, journalists, performers, artists, writers, historians, musicians, designers and researchers. our studies have expanded ourminds, our souls and who we are as both individuals andmembers of the community. after tonight, we now takewhat we have accomplished into a new chapter of our lives.
this is just the beginning ofa new step into our future. take what you have learned bothinside and outside of the class to help others, to helpsociety, to help the world. so much of the college of artsand letters is about creativity. from the viewpoint of an artist,we are asked to create something that looks to its precedentsbut also offers something new, something that expresses ourown unique and personal style. however, creativity is not justshown through arts but also in thought and our studiesto think outside the box
from a contemplative standpoint. for example when itook both art history and history classes thepoint was not of course to rewrite historybut to consider it from a new perspectiveand to ask new questions. creativity and innovation do notbelong to a single department. they can be found anywhere. use this creativity toenrich people's lives, to open people's mind forwhenever the right time comes
and in whatever waypossible look for the situationwhere everyone wins. one of our other strengthsin this college is also one of the greatest strengthsof sac state. there is some scary stuffout right there right now in this world that is speaking of discriminationand intolerance. it is now more importantthat ever before to embrace the diversityof american culture.
you get to choose whereyou go in life and you get to choose what you do butwhatever it is do it well and do it to bettereveryone's lives. but this is your dayand this is your night so once again congratulationsgraduating class of 2016. >> thank you stephanie gin. each year the university bestowsscholastic honors upon those undergraduate candidateswhose academic excellence has consistently beenrecognized by the faculty.

the community of scholars. master's degree holders weara [inaudible], a black gown with oblong sleeves openat the wrist and a hood. it is the hood thattells the story. the hood symbolizesmuch hard work. it also confers special status. while no area of studyis every truly conquered, master's candidates, you havereached a level of mastery. that makes you a memberof the academic community.
